Engaging Rural Youth

Women and youth play an important role in the global economy. In many parts of Ghana, Women contribute at least half of the total labor input in the job market.  Ghana has a population of about 27.9 million (2016 est.), one third of the country’s population is women between the ages of 15-35 years. Unemployment has become one of the most serious problems confronting Ghana. Unemployment among the youth is 40% in the rural areas and 49% in the urban areas. As a result of this, and also because of the uncertain future, Ghanaian youths are pushed to engage in illegal small scale mining (galamsey) which is destroying our farmlands and water bodies, rural-urban migration and deforestation which is causing harm to our environment.

Green Ghana acknowledges that increased participation of rural youth in agribusiness for development and extension will accelerate the realization of development goals, such as reducing poverty and increasing food security. Green Ghana is working with rural youth to empower them to becoming entrepreneurs in organic farming.
